                        Spam is any kind of unwanted and unsolicited communication through an online medium. That could be unwanted email, instant message, text message, or social media message, among other forms of internet communication. Spam mails, junk mails, or unsolicited emails advertise products and services to a mailing list or newsgroup. This kind of spam is irritating yet harmless. The online spam that is harmful is used as a way to steal one's identity, also known as pishing. Since the internet is a free and open medium, it becomes difficult to completely prevent such spam emails from being sent. Some tips below will help you identity spam and junk mail and ways to avoid it.

Why am I getting online spam and/or junk emails?

Whenever you provide your personal information in a public forum, you may receive unsolicited emails. Some of the online activities that make your email address vulnerable to internet spammers include the following:

• Chatting online
• Registering on a website
• Providing personal details on networking sites
• Joining mailing lists that are not moderated
• Providing personal details on your blog or website
• Posting to message boards or newsgroups

How do I avoid spam?

• Adjust your Spam or Junk Filters in your email account settings
• Do not open spam emails or links in spam emails to avoid receiving future spam
• Never download and/or open any file attachments from an unknown or questionable source
• Create a new email account and username if your current email account is too corrupted with spam
